How to prepare for college mentally

By June 10, 2022Blog

Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing good. Almost after 2 years you all have got a chance to visit your school and meet your teachers and friends personally. I can understand your feelings of going through this phase. You are on the verge of taking a big decision  which can become a turning point of your life.

For past 15 years, you all were having your small circle with whom you have become comfortable. Your parents, siblings, friends, school teachers, etc. With all of them you have made a great bonding. But in few days you are going to be part of macro culture i.e. College, where you are going to meet new people, will be having new experiences and a way to pave your future.

All school students in their life surely sees a dream of going college and its natural. Many of us while walking on road come in contact with those cool guys having fun and all and dreams to become one of those, isn’t it? I understand your feelings but as a mentor I would like to suggest you some pointers in preparing yourself mentally for college.

College life is not about branded clothes, cool behaviour, making high profile friends and having fun. It’s a way more than that where you get a chance to create your future. A future which has a power to ‘make you’ or ‘break you’ and its in your hand to choose it wisely.

Here I am sharing some points which can help you to enjoy your college life positively.

  1. Be confident: A change from small circle to a big one is not easy. But remember, ‘Confidence is a key to success’ and whoever has it can easily come out of any problem.
  2. A makeover: With this I don’t mean that you have to wear those expensive clothes to look cool. I can totally understand that wearing school uniform for 10 years is boring. So many of you may think that now I have got a chance to wear those stylish clothes which you see in the films. Dear, those are films (fictional) and your life is a real one. Your appearance matter alot as it tells your intention about your life. So, keep it simple and formal.
  3. Your circle: After being friends with your school buddies for 10 years you are going to meet new people. In your college journey you will come across different types of people and at this stage it is very necessary to choose your circle wisely. I would suggest you to choose those with whom you feel comfortable. At first, everyone are strangers. After few days you get to know your classmates properly. Remember this circle of friends are crucial and selecting it wisely can help to build your personality. It is correctly said, ‘Your personality can be found from your choices of friends.’
  4. Neglect the peer pressure: After getting in college, there starts a competition of becoming the most popular girl/boy. Everyone are special and have different abilities. Some are all rounders, some have one special ability and that does not mean you are less. Avoid this thinking and concentrate on your ability. That is why initially I told you to be confident. Confidence has a power to make you. So, try to develop the skills which make you happy.
  5. Adjustments: College is a place where you will get a lot of experiences. Its a mini corporate world where have to go through lot of teamwork with your classmates. Sometimes due to different personalities, your and team members opinion may differs. So at this point you have to thing in a cool way and have to take decision which is best for your team by keeping aside your ego. Try listening your team members idea, keep your idea in front of them, make necessary adjustments and get positive result. Complications happen if you complicate the things. Keep it simple with your graceful thinking.
  6. Go with the flow: All things does not happen as per your planning. Sometimes you have to trust the changes. If you are getting admission in your favourite field, thats great. Take advantage and be successful. But if you are not getting admission in your favourite field is not an end. Some changes are for better. Instead of losing hope, find out various opportunities of that field. Try to learn from your teachers and your classmates if you find any difficulty. Going with the flow opens new ways which are meant for you.

I hope the above points can help you to prepare yourself mentally for college. Try to make your college days memorable. Learn new things, develop your skills and most importantly instead of showing off, try to create positive personality which can help you to build your career. Always choose a path which can lead you towards your dream.
